Jason Chu is a piano pop singer-songwriter from Vancouver, British Columbia. Classically trained in piano since age four, Jason decided 13 years later that he no longer wanted to be confined by pre-written sheet music and began writing his own songs at 17.
In 2006, Jason founded pop group Locus with bandmate, former model, and singer-songwriter Kaila So. Over the next five years, he would go on to write or co-write, record, perform, arrange, and produce virtually all of the songs that appear on Locus' four independently-released records. Since forming, the band has made dozens of live appearances at well-known Lower Mainland events and venues, including Vancouver Pride and Anime Evolution.
In an effort to hone his vocal and interpretative skills, Jason began performing made-for-YouTube piano cover versions of his all-time favourite songs. Reception to the videos was very positive, even garnering the attention of Jenny Berggren, lead singer of Grammy award-winning Swedish pop group Ace of Base, who personally selected his acoustic version of her single “Gotta Go” as the winner of the Gotta Go Remix contest in 2011.
In 2007, Jason wrote his very first solo song with bandmate and twin brother Kelvin Chu. It was the beginnings of what would become his first album as a solo performer, "From Behind the Mirror." Deeply personal and introspective, "Mirror" is a collection of songs that chronicle Jason’s ongoing journey of self-discovery and re-discovery, documenting and dissecting many of his life-changing experiences. Jason has since released his sophomore album, "Fault Line" in 2012.
Jason is currently writing music for short film projects, and has continued to collaborate with artists from Japan and the US, most notably with American singer-songwriter-choreographer AnnMarie Fox, earning an International Music and Entertainment Association nomination for Pop Song of the Year in 2015 for "Fatal Attraction," co-written by both artists.
“Writing lyrics is one of my life's consistents – one of the only things I've continued to do since 1997. I enjoy scratching my feelings and ideas onto paper or tapping them into my phone, and then slowly piecing my ideas together once I have a better idea of what I want to say. The process gives me a great sense of accomplishment, and at the same time, it lets me to come to terms with events in either my own life or in others'. Recording these songs allows me to capture my life's lessons and remind myself of them, over and over again.”
